There is a hill in Rome where the city seems to hold its breath. From the Parioli, looking out over rooftops and domes and two thousand years of history, couples have been exchanging vows at Villa Miani for decades. I have been planning weddings here for over twenty years. I have stood in that secret garden more than a hundred times and felt the same thing every time — that this place does something to people. It makes the world feel very, very beautiful.
This guide is everything I know about getting married at Villa Miani. Not the brochure version — the real one. The spaces, the flow, the seasons, the costs, the details that nobody tells you and that only twenty years of experience can teach you. If you are considering Villa Miani for your wedding in Rome, read this first.
What makes Villa Miani exceptional is not one single space but the way its distinct spaces flow into each other throughout the day. Each one has its own character, its own light, its own emotional register. A wedding at Villa Miani is not an event — it is a journey through spaces, each more beautiful than the last. And every space has a carefully considered backup — because twenty years of experience have taught me that the best weddings are the ones where no one ever notices the contingency plans.
Hidden from the rest of the estate, the secret garden is where ceremonies happen. It is intimate and enclosed, wrapped in greenery, with a quality of silence that feels almost liturgical. Guests arrive and immediately understand that something important is about to happen here. I have seen couples — even those who thought they wanted something grander — walk into this garden and immediately say: this is the one. It is that kind of place.
Guests arrive approximately 30 minutes before the ceremony and are welcomed by a soft drinks buvette just outside the garden — a gentle, elegant transition into the event. About ten minutes before the ceremony begins, they are invited to take their seats, and the day officially begins. If you wish to prepare as a bride at Villa Miani itself, this can be arranged with an additional setup fee covering the space, service and food and beverage.
For smaller guest lists — up to around 100 people — the secret garden itself can also serve as the cocktail space after the ceremony, creating a beautiful sense of continuity in one magical setting. For larger numbers, the aperitivo moves to the Guardaroma terrace. Either way, the catering will provide seating for approximately 50% of guests during the cocktail hour — standard Italian practice, because guests move between buffet stations and conversations rather than remaining seated. Villa Miani also makes available ten sets of elegant wrought iron sofas with white cushions; alternatively, we can arrange rental furniture styled to match your wedding aesthetic.
Musical accompaniment is almost always present for both the ceremony and the aperitivo — often the same musicians, with a different repertoire for each moment. Musicians are positioned in front of the garden gate, where afternoon shade protects both performers and instruments. One important note: all audio and lighting technical services at Villa Miani must go through Tecnoservice 2000, the venue's exclusive technical partner. My advice — always ask your musicians for their technical rider and send it directly to Tecnoservice for a quote. Only by adding both costs together will you have the true final figure for music and production.
The cocktail hour lasts approximately one hour when served as canapés on trays, or up to an hour and a half with buffet stations — the classic Italian wedding format. The rain plan: for smaller guest numbers (up to 80), the backup ceremony space is the Bellevue room on the ground floor, with the aperitivo moving to the Venetian salon. For larger weddings, the first floor rooms host the ceremony with the ground floor handling the aperitivo.
The belvedere — guardaroma in Italian, literally "the one that watches Rome" — is the terrace that gazes out over the entire city. St. Peter's dome on the horizon. The rooftops spread below you. The afternoon light turning everything amber and gold. There is no other venue in Rome that offers this view at this altitude, at this proximity to the city centre. It is genuinely one of the most photographed terraces in Italy, and for good reason.
When the ceremony takes place in the secret garden, the Guardaroma terrace becomes the natural home of the aperitivo — and it is where couples are photographed as married for the first time, with Rome spread behind them. The terrace handles larger numbers with ease, making it the ideal aperitivo space for bigger celebrations. It is also, without question, the backdrop that guests remember for the rest of their lives.
As the sky deepens from gold to indigo, dinner moves to the patio — a covered outdoor space that combines the elegance of an interior with the openness of the Roman night. Long tables, round tables, candlelight, flowers. The patio is where the design concept of your wedding reaches its fullest expression. I have seen it dressed in sage green linen with cascading crystal vases, in white with clouds of gypsophila, in terracotta and dried botanicals. Every time, it is extraordinary.
The patio can accommodate up to 500 guests with round tables — without a dance floor — or up to 300 guests with a full band setup, stage and dance floor. One important rule to plan around: outdoor music at Villa Miani must end by 22:30. My approach is always to time the cake cutting for 22:30 on the patio, followed by the first dance, and then transition inside for the rest of the evening. It creates a natural and beautiful rhythm to the night. The rain plan for the patio is the Salone delle Feste — Villa Miani's magnificent indoor ballroom.
The Salone delle Feste measures 26.80 by 16.10 metres and can host up to 550 guests with round tables — without a band stage or dance floor. It is fully air conditioned, which makes it not just an excellent rain backup but an outstanding Plan A during the hottest summer months, when outdoor dining becomes uncomfortable. When it is the primary dinner space, it demands proper scenic lighting — as do all of Villa Miani's rooms during a wedding — and the results, when done well, are spectacular.
After dinner, the celebration moves to the Venetian salon — and it is here that the night truly begins. Gilded mirrors, frescoed ceilings, a quality of light that makes everyone look impossibly glamorous. This is where the band plays and the dancing continues until the small hours. The main room measures 17.80 by 8.90 metres, with two adjacent rooms — the Casanova and the Arazzi, each 8.30 by 8.90 metres — which can be used for bar service, dessert displays or additional seating. As noted above, the Venetian salon also serves as the rain backup for the aperitivo, with the ground floor Bellevue room (15.80 by 5.60 metres) providing additional space when needed.
The first floor of Villa Miani is a long, rectangular space measuring 34.5 by 6.20 metres, modular into four distinct rooms — the Guardaroma, Ambasciatori, Regine and Camino — plus a panoramic terrace with a breathtaking view of Rome at night. I sometimes use the first floor for the after-dinner: the cake is cut on the terrace under the Roman stars, followed by dancing in the Guardaroma room. It creates an intimate, elevated finale that feels entirely different from everything that came before. Both the men's and women's facilities are located on this floor, and a small elevator connects all levels for guests with limited mobility.
Ceremonies at Villa Miani are symbolic. This is not a limitation — it is, for most international couples, exactly what they want. A symbolic ceremony gives you complete freedom: you write your own vows, you choose your officiant, the ceremony unfolds in your language and follows your own structure. There is no bureaucracy, no notary, no legal formality standing between you and the moment. Just two people, the secret garden, and everything they want to say to each other.
If you also need to be legally married in Italy, civil ceremonies in Rome take place at the city's municipal venues — most beautifully at the Campidoglio, in the historic halls of the city's seat of government. Many couples choose both: a brief, intimate civil ceremony at the Campidoglio, followed by a full symbolic celebration at Villa Miani. Legal certainty and creative freedom, all in one extraordinary Roman day. I coordinate both, and I know how to make the two feel like a single, seamless experience.
Villa Miani can comfortably host weddings from 80 guests up to 500 and beyond. The sweet spot is between 80 and 200 — large enough to feel like a real celebration, intimate enough for every guest to feel truly part of it.
The best months are April, May, June, September and October. The light in May is extraordinary — warm but not yet the heat of July and August. October has a golden quality that photographs beautifully and keeps guests comfortable through the evening. Thanks to its excellent indoor backup spaces, Villa Miani can also host winter weddings beautifully — the interiors are stunning in the low, warm light of the cooler months. One practical note: from October onwards, always plan for scenic lighting during the aperitivo, as dusk arrives earlier and the right lighting makes an enormous difference.
The venue fee at Villa Miani starts from approximately €16,000 + VAT for a full-day exclusive buyout, depending on the day and season. Food and beverage, flowers, music, photography and other services are additional. A complete wedding at Villa Miani with 100 guests, full catering and all vendors typically ranges between €50,000 and €90,000 depending on the level of service chosen.
Villa Miani works with approved vendors for catering and technical services — this is non-negotiable. For all other vendors, I strongly recommend working with suppliers who are already familiar with the venue's rules and rhythms. One practical detail that catches many couples off guard: Villa Miani operates daily, which means vendors may be asked to complete their breakdown and collection overnight. Night pickup is standard practice here. Always confirm — and budget for — this cost when contracting your florists and rental companies.
The catering at Villa Miani is handled exclusively by their in-house team, and it is excellent. Here is everything I always explain to my couples before they sit down with the catering team.
Open bar is an additional cost, not included in the standard package. During the aperitivo, Italian standard service includes prosecco and spritz; cocktails, beers and other spirits are charged separately. Open bar typically begins from the cake cutting, but American couples in particular often prefer an open bar from the aperitivo onwards — this is absolutely possible, for an additional fee covering approximately 2.5 to 3 hours of service.
Outside alcohol is generally not permitted — including spirits added to the aperitivo buvette, which must be sourced from Villa Miani. The one exception is champagne or sparkling wine brought by the couple for the cake toast. As for wines during dinner: bringing your own is welcome, there is no corkage fee, but it will not reduce the per-head menu cost.
The tasting is typically organised in the winter months after Christmas — a dedicated session during which you sample a selection of first courses, main courses and side dishes paired with wines, before making your final menu choices. It is one of the most enjoyable parts of the planning process.
The guaranteed minimum is a contractual figure set at the number of confirmed adult guests. If fewer guests attend, you still pay the minimum. Children and staff — musicians, wedding planner and team, florist, technicians — are always calculated separately and added on top of the adult minimum. The catering team accommodates dietary requirements and allergies with special meals upon request.
Service follows the English style, with one waiter per 15 guests — more than sufficient for an excellent, attentive experience. If you choose individually plated courses, additional staff will be required at an extra cost. Late night snacks — mini pizzas, sliders, crisps, savoury croissants and more — are a wonderful option for the after-dinner hours and always popular with guests.
The generator. Villa Miani provides a maximum of 5kW of venue power — not sufficient for a full band setup. A generator for the music is almost always necessary, and its cost should be factored in from the beginning. It is one of the most common hidden costs I encounter when couples have not worked with an experienced planner at this venue.
Transport. Plan transport to Villa Miani carefully — and especially from the venue at the end of the evening. Rome's taxi availability late at night and on weekends is limited, and guests waiting for a ride is not the ending your wedding deserves. I always coordinate transport solutions in advance: shuttle buses, private car services, or a combination of both.
The bridal suite. Villa Miani offers a room for the wedding night at an additional cost, with breakfast included the following morning. A beautiful way to end the most important day of your life — waking up at the venue, taking a quiet breakfast before the world begins again.

Over one hundred weddings. Twenty years. I know which corner of the belvedere catches the best light at 6pm in October. I know how long it takes guests to move from the secret garden to the aperitivo terrace and how to choreograph that transition so it feels like part of the celebration rather than a logistics problem. I know when to schedule the cake cutting, how to sequence the evening so that the 22:30 outdoor music limit becomes a natural rhythm rather than a constraint, which catering options work best for American guests and which for European ones.
I know the venue's rhythms — the way the staff works, the setup timeline, the vendor load-in requirements, the overnight pickup logistics. I know what can go wrong and how to prevent it. I know how to make the Venetian salon feel intimate for 50 people and spectacular for 300. This knowledge is not something you can find in a brochure. It is twenty years of being in that room, on that terrace, in that garden.
